More than just a television program, American Idol embodies the American Dream: success, fame, and rags to riches stories - and many more of the ideals by which we measure our lives. To what extent do we live according to this paradigm? Are we willing to allow God to totally collapse our ideals and build a whole new framework? This series focused on the book of Ephesians and how the story of God's design compares to the story the world calls us to live.

July 1-29, 2007

What if a worldwide epidemic took place and you and all those you love come down with a terminal condition. One day someone comes to you not simply with a cure for the condition but also with the possibility for a profoundly different kind of life. You are cured but your friends and family are unaware of this chance at life. What would you do?

A terminal condition is one of the Bible’s descriptions of our condition apart from the chance at life offered through Jesus. But we are not only offered this chance at life, God also compels us to love and tell others. This is at the heart of the gospel, this is what is meant by evangelism. The word, “evangelism” has gotten used in so many different ways in so many different context that it has lost its meaning . . . it has gotten a bad rap. Evangelism is not about shoving something down the throat of someone who is really not hungry. Evangelism is simply expression of the gospel; it is a way of living and a way of conversing. One of our priorities as a faith community this year is evangelism. That simply means we’ve got some growing to do . . . loving God, loving people, living out the gospel, sharing the gospel.

This series looked at a God who is vast, awesome, holy, great beyond compare and yet intimate, personal, merciful and caring beyond belief. Thus the idea of the title, “The Great Beyond” – not speaking of the beyond as an inanimate object but rather as the being, God. Ultimately, this series is about worship: seeing God for who He is, seeing ourselves for who we are, and responding appropriately.

September 9 - October 14, 2007

"Pushed to the Edge" was a study based on the book of Ecclesiastes - a book that raises a lot of questions but doesn't provide many answers. The writer of Ecclesiastes pushed us to lay bare the foundations of our lives and further pushes our boundaries of thought.
