Calvary Church is committed to help single mothers facing difficult transitions in life. One way we help is through our Hagar Ministry.
The Hagar Ministry was launched in 1998 through a gift from a single
mother who was supported by Calvary Church. The gift was intended to
assist single mothers achieve personal and financial independence. The
name "Hagar" was chosen as a reminder of the Old Testament woman who,
as a single mother, was cared for by God in a desperate time of need.
Few changes in life are more devastating than becoming a single mother
following a divorce, death of a spouse, or any circumstance that leaves
you parenting alone. Often, the woman becomes responsible for her
children. She may have to return to school. She might have to purchase
a car. She will likely feel overwhelmed, frightened, and confused by
all the changes going on in her world. In times like this, the Hagar
Ministry can help!
The Hagar Ministry has two elements: financial assistance and personal
mentoring. Financial assistance from the Hagar ministry is only
provided after a personal mentor has been identified to work with the
single mother.
Financial assistance typically consists of paying for:
- Childcare expenses so the woman can participate in counseling, work or look for work, take courses, etc.
- Work related expenses, such as a car or new clothing.
- Education related expenses, such as tuition or books.
- Legal expenses for obtaining child custody or support payments.
- Medical coverage until job benefits are provided.
Single moms who work with our Hagar Ministry receive guidance in growing their relationship with God as well as budgeting. The Hagar Ministry helps single moms make significant strides towards personal independence and spiritual maturity.
