Acts – continuing what Jesus started
September is the month of beginnings. I know that the year technically begins in January but most of us live according to the rhythms of the school year. Things shut down a bit at the end of June and we live with a different pace through the summer, but in September schools open and we get back to work full throttle.
We are going to kick off this ministry year by reminding ourselves of our mission and vision – it’s important to regularly revisit why we exist and why we do all that we do – as we study the New Testament book of Acts. Acts will be our guide as we watch that first group of Christians live out the values of mission, community and transformation. We will see over and over again that our responsibility is nothing more than to continue what Jesus started.
Luke begins the book of Acts by reminding his readers that he wrote his first volume (The Gospel of Luke) “about all that Jesus began to do and to teach” and now the sequel will tell what Jesus continues to do and to teach through the church. They simply continued what Jesus started and that is exactly what we are to do.
Continuing what Jesus started means that we will have to be creative and take risks and some of what we do will be very different than what that first group of Christians did because our cultural contexts are so different.
The church has never been only for Christians and Calvary Church has never been for ourselves, we have been placed here to be a community in mission with Jesus for the good of our surrounding community and the world.
We will see the missional, relational and transformational gospel values lived out over and over again as we work our way through the book of Acts. We will also be encouraged and challenged to live out those values more faithfully in our networks and contexts today.
Join us this fall as we look at the book of Acts.
